Tribes : Review

Tribes (Zip Codes #1)
by Toni Edge

Blurb
There exists a forgotten breed of children in the urban undergrounds of New York City. They are shape shifters, shadow walkers, guardians, shamans, and medicine people. They call themselves the forgotten ones or “tribes.” They are the heralds of an ancient gene pool, but they haven’t been forgotten. Something is hunting them.

It’s Mara Pearson’s sixteenth birthday. Her mother is missing and she’s discovered that she’s a shape shifter. During her search she discovers the recent teenage abductions in the neighborhood may have a dark connection with her mother’s disappearance. Desperate to find answers, she joins the 11207 tribe, a group of magical misfits who agree to help her. When the tribe’s leader is struck down by a hidden enemy, Mara is forced to take over. Mara will have to rescue a tribe member, find her mother, and stop a mystical menace in her neighborhood. Dirty cops, angry drug lords, and rival tribes will be child’s play by comparison. Mara will soon discover that keeping one’s promises isn’t as easy as she thought.

My Review
Mara has just turned sixteen and her mother has disappeared. As she hunts for her she realizes her life is about to change. She is one of the Forgotten ones or Tribes as they call themselves. Children who have powers, are shifters, shadow walkers and more. Mara is a shifter and as she hunts for her mother she never really knows who to trust. Kids have been disappearing and it all may be tied in with her mother disappearing. She has to face drug lords, rival tribes, dirty cops and more. The tribe she joins is a mixture of kids and the leader gets took down. It seems Mara is a special forgotten one and everyone wants her for different reasons. She has to try and save her mother, stop the bad guys and figure out what she wants.

I have read many books with all types of different characters and this one is an enjoyable one. t is a little different from the others I read and I love the plot. Mara is no way prepared for what is thrust on her and while I will say one or two times she got on my nerves I still liked her. She has to figure things out and is never sure who to trust. Her enemies could be her friends and her friends her enemies. She is young so I will give her a little break about going boy crazy at times even when I would think her mind should be on other things. I do like when she steps up and does what is right and enjoyed the action scenes. The plot is a good one and I hope to see the other tribes and what goes on with them. If I would change anything in this it would be to give info on just a few characters. At times it seemed there was to many but as this is the first book the author has to lay down the background. I will be reading the next one for sure.
