Lauren Layne’s New Adult novel tells the story of a girl with secrets, a guy with scars, and a love that could save them both... or destroy them.
When Olivia Middleton abandons the glamour of Park Avenue for a remote, coastal town in Maine, everyone assumes she’s being the kind do-gooder she’s always been. But Olivia has a secret: helping an injured war veteran reenter society isn’t about charity—it’s about penance. Only, Olivia’s client isn’t the grateful elderly man she’s expecting. Instead, he’s a brooding twenty-four-year-old who has no intention of being Olivia’s path to redemption . . . and whose smoldering gaze and forbidden touch might be her undoing.
Paul Langdon doesn’t need a mirror to show him he’s no longer the hotshot quarterback he was before the war. He knows he’s ugly—inside and out. He’ll do anything to stay in self-imposed exile, even accept his father’s ultimatum that Paul tolerate the newest caretaker for three months or lose his inheritance. But Paul doesn’t count on the beautiful twenty-two-year-old who makes him long for things that he can never have. And the more she slips past his defenses, the more keeping his distance is impossible.
Now Paul and Olivia have to decide: Will they help each other heal? Or are they forever broken?
My Review
Olivia needs time away from all those she knows. Everyone thinks she is doing it to help others but only she knows it is to help someone and to feel better about the mistakes she has made. She thinks it will be an easy job helping a veteran. Only she soon finds out he isn't what she thought he would be and he doesn't want her there. Paul is used to people giving him a horrified look. He was injured in the war and only wants to be by his self. He has ran every care taker he has had off. Now his father has let him know that he has to let this one stick around for three months or he is cut off. Olivia is the worse thing that he ever pictured. She makes him long for the days when he was young, carefree and had no scars. Both have inner demons they are battling and if they work together they may help each other and find happiness.
I have to say I read about Olivia in another book and she is not at all what I pictures from that book. Getting to know the real her was amazing. She is full of regrets and hates how things ended with her ex. She knows what she did is wrong and she hurt not just him but it also ruined her friendship with her best friend. She is not one to push people but she does manage to get them to do what she wants. With Paul she doesn't treat him like an invalid or like he is ugly. She gives him hell right back when he thinks he can push her away. I love how she stands her ground and tries her best to do the right thing for her. Paul at first seems like a huge ass. He is hateful to everyone and pushes all away. He doesn't think anyone will ever be able to see past the scars. He is very protective of people he cares about. I have to say I like the side of him Olivia brings out. He is a great guy and I love what he needs his money for.
This was a great story of two people who butt heads a lot. They both have inner scars and in Paul's case outer as well. Olivia gets him to want to heal and go out. She teaches him the world is still out there and he needs to join it. I have to say I enjoyed seeing Olivia get the closure she needs. She is a great character to get to know. I hated how Paul acted at first but I do say I can easily understand why he feels that way. To get to see the real Paul that Olivia brings out is a joy. There is plenty of hotness between them and I will say at first I worried how Olivia would act towards him but she did amazing. This was a wonderful book I could easily see myself reading again.
